Chris Brown has been released on police custody following his arrest for allegedly punching a man in the face in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The R&B singer was released after spending a night in a jail cell as prosecutors reduced the charge of assault to a misdemeanour, which carries a maximum sentence of six months.

The news is bound to anger Brown's victim, Parker Brown, 20, who said that the R&B singer, alongside his bodyguard, broke his nose with the force of the punch.

The incident occured at 4.30am on Sunday morning outside the W Hotel in Washington DC, where Brown was hosting an event at a nightclub in the capital. The argument is alleged to have began when a man and his friend jumped into a photo Brown was taking with two female fans.

The singer's lawyer, Danny Onorato, denied his client was involved in any wrongdoing, saying: "Christopher Brown committed no crime. We understand that his security staff acted to protect Mr Brown and Mr Brown's property as he was authorised to do under District of Columbia law. We are confident that Mr Brown will be exonerated of any wrongdoing."

Brown will be due back in court on 25 November, 2013. He is still on five year's probation for  assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna back in 2009, and has since been involved in violent altercations with fellow musicians Drake and Frank Ocean.
