Fourteenth of February has been set aside for the annual Valentine's day celebration. The month of love as it is fondly called ushers in that time of the year when romance is at it's peak.

In this season, lovers find a way of making that special person in their life feel really special. Some do it in their own little way, while others go to the extreme to make it an unforgettable memory for their loved ones.

Like Christmas, it's a season of love, compassion and sharing.

You wouldn't want to offend your spouse/boo at this time of the year. This is a time to mend broken fences in relationships, inject life into a lacklustre relationship and for those that are single, get hooked up.

The Origin of Valentines day celebration remains unknown but one legend has survived.

It is believed that Saint Valentine who was a bishop held secret marriage ceremonies for soldiers in opposition to Claudius II who had prohibited marriage for young men and was executed by the latter.

During the lifetime of Valentine, the golden era of Roman empire had almost come to an end. Lack of quality administrators led to frequent civil strife. Education declined, taxation increased and trade witnessed a very bad time. When Claudius became the emperor, intending to protect Rome, he felt that married men were more emotionally attached to their families, and thus, will not make good soldiers. He believed that marriage made the men weak. So he issued an edict forbidding marriage to assure quality soldiers.

The ban on marriage was a great shock for the Romans. But they dared not voice their protest against the mighty emperor. The kindly bishop Valentine also realized the injustice of the decree, so he secretly performed many marriages for young lovers. But such things cannot remain hidden for long. It was only a matter of time before Claudius came to know of this "friend of lovers," and had him arrested.

While awaiting his sentence in prison, Valentine was approached by his jailor, Asterius whose daughter was blind asking for Valentine who is believed to have healing powers, to heal her. Valentine was able to help the girl and when Claudius II met Valentine, he was impressed by the dignity and conviction of the latter.

However, Valentine refused to agree with the emperor regarding the ban on marriage and accepting the Roman gods so the Emperor had him executed.

Saint Valentine was said to have written a letter to Asterius' daughter who had become his close friend with the words, "From your Valentine", a word that is frequently used during valentine.

As you celebrate this valentine knowing the story behind the celebration, try to do something out of the ordinary.

Do something for love, do something romantic, do something adventurous and you will be happy you did.
