TINUBU, HOLYFIELD TRADE WORDS AHEAD OF THEIR BIG FIGHT
Ahead of the Evander Holyfield versus Asiwaju Bola Tinubu Lagos Charity Boxing Bout slated for May 25 2017 as part of the celebrations of Lagos at 50, the two gladiators have been trading boasts ahead of the event which will feature other impressive fights.
Following the reactions and enthusiasm that greeted the recent declaration of Tinubu who will swap punches with Holyfiled in the most anticipated boxing fight titled Rhumbles, it has left no one in doubt that the event will go down in history as one of the biggest boxing events in Nigeria.
The former Lagos Governor and APC National Leader had said that he will knock down the five times heavy weight champion, Evander Holyfield realistically in the second round of the fight that would be refereed by Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka. Before Tinubu’s statement, Evander Holyfield has also showed off in a popular video revealing his participation in the fight where he stated that he is coming for Tinubu “Jagaban, I am coming for you, the real deal”.
The promoters of the event, ACI Entertainment and Bishop Entertainment Consult said they are very pleased with the positive feedbacks received so far as regards the event. The CEO of ACI, Mr. Wole Adeniyi said he believed it’s time to bring boxing entertainment back to Africa. “Boxing was one of the most popular leisure activities in Nigeria during the immediate post-WW11 era up until 1970's. Today, soccer matches are by far Nigeria's most popular sporting events but boxing bouts was once as popular, if not more so at the end of colonialism rule in Nigeria. Back then, many of our sporting stars were championship-caliber boxers. Given that historical boxing background, ACI Entertainment feels is only fitting and appropriate to start the process by bringing the five times heavy weight champion, Evander Holyfield on board as a partner”.
The organisers have earlier announced that the charity-focused event “is aimed at bringing world attention to some health-related issues in Africa, and will focus on cases such as Autism in Children, Breast Cancer, Mental Illness and HIV/AIDS, River Blindness”. They will also be donating medical and relief materials worth millions of naira to Lagos State Government and other states.
